The Young at Heart

Today’s Younger Generation Are A Lost Bunch !

No doubt just what the generation before said about my generation and the generation before that.

As history apparently never repeats, what some are doing to themselves today won’t be the trend tomorrow and with that, for some, a potential costly price to pay in some way shape or form.

We all wanted to make a statement when we were teenagers – just some do it a bit differently!

In the manstheory blog “Graduation” I was so impressed by the group of young people in their academic endeavours and could only imagine the huge future they would now embark on.

In similar fashion, I continue to be blown away by the determination, courage and success of some at such a young age.

So here’s three examples that have attracted my attention – mainly through my interest in their chosen endeavours.

In 2010, Jessica Watson sailed around the world solo.  015367-jessica-watson

Jessica overcame the critics after a bad start to successfully complete her goal and dream. I sometimes stare at the horizon over the Pacific Ocean and imagine the romanticism of sailing around the world in a beautiful yacht. Then reality appears, imagine facing the most treacherous oceans that could swallow you up in such a rage brought on by Mother Nature, so far from the safety of terra firma.  You are now in a place where there is no easy exit, your survival is totally in your hands – no one else can hear you. The courage and confidence required in your own ability could determine whether you live or die – beyond me I’m afraid to say – let alone at sixteen.

Last month Max Verstappen won the Spanish Formula One Grand Prix. Yes, he has a pedigree through his father (who never won a Grand Prix). And yes, timing is everything. He was recently promoted to the top rung Red Bull team and yes, the apparently unbeatable F1 Mercedes Benz cars of Hamilton and Rosberg collided in some testosterone display of who is or should be Number One, which took both out of the race and again, yes Australia’s Daniel Ricardo suffered more bad luck with  a puncture also taking him out of the picture.  images

And finally,

Alyssa Azar last week reached the summit of Mount Everest. 6353524-3x2-940x627It was her third trip to Nepal to attempt the summit, but due to the past devastating earthquakes and avalanches both of these attempts where cancelled. Not this time! Alyssa and her team set off from Camp Four at the 7900m South Col at midnight (4am Queensland time on Saturday 21st May) for the last gruelling 948m push to the top – through the so-called “death zone’’ – which can take anything from eight to twelve hours. Alyssa successfully reached the summit and then successfully descended. Three climbers sadly died on Everest in that week. One Sherpa, one Australian and a Danish climber who was making his fifth attempt. Alyssa Azar is nineteen years of age.

It’s quite extraordinary that people at such a young age can have the focus, confidence and maturity to take on and successfully achieve such things. I have mentioned these three and yes, they aren’t the normal teenager, but be assured that there are many more that we pass by in our every day lives that are kicking huge goals well beyond what their age would normally suggest. We all know a young person who is focused on their dreams and have the potential to go for it.

To end with some poignant words from Alyssa –  55-2594085-twb280314azar1_fct702x529x79_ct620x465

“I aim to be as best prepared as possible. I aim to understand the risks and dangers, and also to have the best solutions to them. I aim to be able to make good decisions in the face of grave danger.

“I also know that this is the biggest challenge so far, figuratively and literally.

“I can tell you with certainty that I will not fail through lack of preparation or lack of training, mentally and physically. In life, you can ask no more of yourself than that.”
