Mr Frederic Sausset – Driver Team SRT 41.
The 2016 Le Mans 24 hour endurance race is currently being run. Each year the technology and engineering advancements in the cars continually raise the bar in what is required to be a contender in this famous event. The cars are spectacular in their design and performance.The fitness, both physically and mentally, of the drivers to maintain concentration and reflex skills at an incredible pace throughout night and day including varying treacherous weather conditions, is astounding.
The developments in these race cars quite often flows through to the cars we mere mortals use in our day to day commutes. In fact Garage 56 in pit lane is dedicated each year to a team “displaying Innovative technology”. This allows a start on the grid for a car that is significantly different to the main field.
So to break away for a moment:
In 2012, Frederic Sausset a 47 year old french business man while on holidays in South Western France received a scratch to his forehead. The scratch became infected by the bacteria “Purpura Fulminans”. Mr Sausset fell into a Coma. He awoke with both his forearms amputated and both legs just above the knees. I can’t imagine the months of psychological struggles that this experience would have created. Of the challenges he faced, he did set himself one goal – to race as a driver in the Le Mans 24 hour – this weekend Frederic’s goal is being achieved as I write this post.
Frederic Sausett is one hell of a man. To get to the starting grid also took a lot of support and belief in Frederic. With his driving coach they happened to meet a senior Le Mans organiser ( Vincent Beaumesnil ) who was so taken by Frederic’s ambition and drive that he offered up Garage 56 to Frederic’s team SRT41. Each car must have three drivers for the event. In this case, this meant two able-bodied drivers and Frederic Sausset. The engineering that was required is truly astounding. Funny what you need to consider, the rules say the driver must be able to exit the car in under seven seconds so the car has an ejector seat for Frederic.
What Frederic Saussett and the SRT41 Team has achieved will go well beyond what happens today. The technology and development of this car will no doubt significantly improve the lives of other disabled people in reaching their goals and live a life with so much more potential.
