Scarcity and Abundance

Share the Love

The divide between scarcity and abundance throughout the world’s countries is a constant. We’ve all witnessed the scarcity of food or water in the poorest African countries and the abundance of virtually all things in most developed countries.

But what about the mind sets of people in advanced countries that live by either a mind set of scarcity or a mind set of abundance?

The scarcity mind set is based on not giving anymore than absolutely necessary. Whether it be financial or in the giving of their time. Don’t share it!

Don’t confuse this with an individual’s level of wealth! Many wealthy people are known for how “tight” they are with their money. Yet many people of less means are generous in the giving of their time and quite often also their limited finances.

The point is the scarcity mindset works on the premise that there is a limited amount of resources to go around and hence they have to “hang on” to as much as possible. And of course they’ll also take as much as possible from others. It’s the quick and the dead! To go with it they’re usually a pretty miserable bunch.

The mindset of abundance works in two different ways.

Firstly, they’re charitable up to a point and often will contribute to the community through donations or the giving of their time without expectation of anything in return. They do it through a feeling of duty in giving back to the community. However the charity is only extended to worthy causes who genuinely need assistance – not bludgers!

Secondly, outside of being charitable, they will support others they deem as being worthwhile through mentoring or financial support so as others can advance themselves. They see this as an investment; it could be a business, an employee, a sportsman or an artist who they identify as having potential to grow and will ultimately deliver a financial return in some way shape or form. Again, they won’t waste their time or money on people who won’t help themselves.

They see resources as being in abundance and those resources will grow through a compounding effect in the investment. It’s also duplicated through the legacy – the recipients ultimately developing a similar mindset of abundance  – the return grows larger!

In a positive sense it’s the old adage “what goes around comes around”. Remember if you have a scarcity mindset you can’t take it with you!
