Expanding Your Horizons

Expanding Your Horizons

AHOY !!

Hi,  I’m Tess. Daughter of RD. I am 22 years old and up to a few years ago my story was very similar to many young people worldwide.

After graduating high school, I went straight to university and graduated in October 2015 with a double degree in Law and International Relations. I found my last year of university incredibly stressful trying to compete for a graduate position. When there were 1500 people with the same qualifications applying for 5 positions, it became very difficult to think about what differentiated me from those other brilliant young people.

I found myself wasting away days, weeks and months agonising over the prospects of having worked so hard yet still being unemployed. I realised that regardless of when I began working, I am most likely going to be working into my seventies. I stopped stressing about the future and began living in the moment. I packed my bags and headed overseas by myself.

Over 8 weeks I visited 16 countries and 28 cities across the globe. Some of this was by myself and some, to put my parent’s minds at ease, was through Topdeck Travel. (For any people under 40 reading this, I would definitely recommend their tours!)

January 2016, I headed for Vancouver, Canada to work for 9 months as an au pair. The idea was to work the 9 months, explore Canada and immerse myself in the culture. Well, April 2017 I am still here.

Moving to a new country was, of course, daunting and nerve wracking but I took this in my stride and focused on the opportunity that I had been given. In the last 14 months, I have worked as an au pair, as a deckhand on a commercial fishing vessel.

I have also honed my snowboarding, seen some of the amazing beauty of Canada and taken spontaneous weekend trips to concerts in places such as Nashville and Las Vegas. I am also currently undertaking my Practical Legal Training to get admitted to the Legal Profession sometime in the future.

The point of me writing this blog is that it is easy to get stuck in a 9-5 job that pays the bills and you are “doing life”. My question to you is: are you really living it? Expanding my horizons has been one of the most challenging but bravest things I have done. I miss my home and my family a lot but knowing I have their support has really helped and the experiences I have had are things that I would never have thought of if I went straight into working full time.

I challenge you to step out of your comfort zone. It may not be to move to the other side of the world, it may be trying a recreational sport that you’ve always wanted to, or volunteering at a facility or starting a new hobby.

It’s easy to become comfortable in our surroundings.

Don’t waste your life wishing you tried that sport or travelled overseas. We only get one chance at this so let’s give a damn good crack. – Tess.

  1. You have a strength that i first saw in a man i met almost 20 years ago now. I found myself sometimes using him as a yard stick on occasion when i would be in some doubt on a decision. People like yourself just get on with it. People will draw on Inspirational peole like youself like i did with RD nearly 20 years ago. What you have is worth more than you know, don’t let anyone steal it from you as it is Priceless.

    • Hey mate,
I’ve passed your touching comment onto Tess.
You know it sounds like she is a real soldier – and she really is.
But she is a long way from home and at times has to dig deep.
I’m sure your wonderful words will give gre that little piece of beautiful motivation that she needed.
You’ve always been a rock Ed.

      Best regards
      RD

  2. You certainly have our support.
Of course, having been born in the 1930’s we had a far different guidance from our parents, who had experienced the great depression and 2 world wars.
But having said that, we are happy with our lot, and personally, I consider that I was born of the lucky generation:
Born in 1933 I was not hungry during the height of the depression (thanks to my Mother), I did not have fight a war (although I happily served 6 months in the National Service) and I neveer had to look or a job, because there was a wide range of opportunities on offer.
You know that we knock out an enviably good lifestyle in retirement.
The main thing is we are happy as a couple (59 years married on 5/4/17).
Go for it Tess, we both love you to bits nd are proud of your achievments.
    Grandma and Grandpa 😁😁😁😁😁
