Reading

I love reading, it’s the exercise of the mind. Reading can be educational, it’s entertaining. Through the imagination of the author it can take you away to experience another world.

My curiosity with human endeavour and what makes people “tick” gives me a leaning towards biographies, though I really enjoy a great story. They say you can tell a lot about a person by the books they read.

So here are my last couple of books that I’ve read that have given me great insight, benefit and joy.

TIGER WOODS  – Jeff Benedict and Armen Keteyian

At the height of his golfing career there was no one like him in the game. He was a seemingly exemplary role model to so many, Then there was his well publicised fall from grace. This is an extraordinary insight into the machine that is Tiger Woods. You’ll love him and you will despise him and maybe, just maybe pity him. It’s a truly fascinating read.

KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL – Anthony Bourdain

I was a fan of Anthony Bourdain’s show “No Reservations”. Anthony was a guy who had done the hard yards as a chef in his beloved New York and all that came with that world – the drugs, the organised crime, the die hards and characters that make up the labour in the kitchens. He was an intriguing character who now had a successful career travelling the world sharing his food, restaurant and drinking escapades with no holds barred. Sadly, Anthony Bourdain suicided in France in 2017.

SHOE DOG – The story of NIKE.

In 1963 Phil Knight was just twenty years old. He borrowed $50 from his parents to establish a sports shoe business importing sports shoes from a Japanese manufacturer called Onitsu Tiger. It’s the classic story of a young guy who starts out from nothing. What NIKE is today is the result of one guy’s belief and commitment to succeed. It’s a lifetime of work with many highs and lows. But his determination after years of being virtually broke makes this a real eye opener into the brand we all know today.

SHANTARAM – Gregory David Roberts.

This is a novel of the classic “house brick ” size. It’s a true self written story of his escape from the notoriuos Pentridge prison in Australia, to find his way to India on a fake passport. There he becomes a part of the Bombay mafia. Yet, he creates a medical service in the slums he spent several years living in. Then to end up fighting in a war as a virtual mercenary in Afghanistan. The amazing insights into the world that is Bombay and India is nothing short of extraordinary. The book is beautifully written by a man that was highly educated but got caught up in heroin which led him to armed robbery and ultimately being imprisoned. A man made hard by the life he found himself in, though with the twist of a humanitarian. I was never very far away from this enthralling book. Possibly a masterpiece!

You could get these books on Amazon, though your local book shop should also have them in stock. Gotta love your “hands on feel it” book shop. Happy reading – RD
