Peace and quiet – it’s a beautiful thing, it calms the mind and the soul.

So much of the world around us is consumed by distraction. The need to be constantly attached like an appendage to our mobile devices is crazy.

Sadly, I plead guilty in reacting to the “beep beep” that tells me another message or email has arrived, signifying the green light in almost programmed robotic urgency for me to stop whatever it is I’m doing and check who has just turned up in my inbox. Usually I end up regretting the moment I bothered to look at it!

How about the continual monkey chatter that goes on in our brains – or is that just me?  Mmmm, no I doubt it, I think we all have that annoying little voice constantly badgering us, questioning this or that, creating anxiety, creating unnecessary fear, talking ourselves out of whatever, self doubting ourselves, breaking our concentration and focus, disrupting sleep patterns. It’s another distraction that plays havoc with our ability to just breath and change down a few gears and gather our thoughts.

Time away from all our distractions is seemingly becoming a luxury. Yet it’s a luxury we can all afford, it’s actually free. That’s right absolutely no charge with great benefits!

To sit quietly, to allow your mind to calm and physical tensions to settle is to truly relax, you become more composed.

Sitting quietly could be doing absolutely nothing like simple meditation or prayer. It could  be something you really enjoy like painting, playing an instrument, knitting, reading a book, just being creative or a Saturday afternoon nap on your favourite couch. Whatever it is, it’s a pleasure without digital or mental distraction.

I use this little mantra when I’m swimming – it keeps me focused on my swim stroke and my breathing, it removes the mental distraction. It keeps me in the present where I should be.

Try using this to calm your mind while sitting quietly. Put your mobile device in another room or even turn it off. Remember a still mind is a calm mind.

A couple of days a week when I’m having a rest day from my morning run or walk, I sit outside in the early morning for twenty minutes or so, listening to the birds singing their choir, announcing the start of another day. Or I might combine the time to sit and read. It’s quiet time that I really enjoy before another day begins in my working environment.

Without distraction you might be surprised what you discover sitting quietly in the present. A little peace and quiet – That’s where the roses are!

  1. Loved it… “my special time” is often spent on my dirt bike. It’s certainly not quiet or relaxing, however I am completely focused on what I am doing and other distractions are a world away…
