The life of Niki Lauda is an extraordinary story of courage, passion and fighting spirit.

Born in Austria in 1949, he debuted in Formula 1 in 1971. In the following season his driving ability impressed a gentleman by the the name of Enzo Ferrari who offered Niki a drive with Scuderia Ferrari.

In 1975 he won his first World Championship.

In 1976 when in a strong position to take out the World Championship of that year, he was involved in an horrific crash at the renowned Nurburgring circuit in Germany. His Ferrari exploding into a fire ball.

Suffering severe burns and major lung damage it was doubtful whether he would survive!

This is where the story becomes so extraordinary.

Undergoing extensive surgery to save his life and just six weeks after the crash, amazingly he returned to the Italian Grand Prix to qualify fifth fastest.

The Scotish driver, Jacki Stewart recalled the painful sight of Niki Lauda putting his helmet on with his wounds still so raw and obvious.

Only a year after his horrific accident Niki Lauda won his second Formula 1 World Championship.

I find it remarkable how courageous and committed he must have been to prove to himself and the rest of the world that he was still world class in his abilities, in fact still the best in the world!

Niki Lauda retired 2 years later.

He returned to the sport in 1982, driving for McLaren. Winning his third world title in 1984.

He was known to be highly intellectual and a very stoic man. He went on to establish Lauda Air and continued his involvement in Formula 1 through management roles in teams including the current and highly successful Mercedes Benz operation.

An extraordinary man who’s drive, passion and pure never say die attitude certainly touched my life. – RD
