The Noble Young Man

It’s within walking distance to one of the best beaches in the world and it was always a bit of a sleeper and a well kept secret. Not anymore, things have changed dramatically in the last couple of years. Gentrification and population growth have well and truly made its way to our once sleepy dog suburb.

With so many streets these days, cars are parked on both sides with only enough room for 1 car to pass through.

As Debra, my first wife (and only wife) enters our street on her way home from work, she cautiously makes her way through the tunnel of cars. In that moment another car reverses out of a driveway with his surfboard on the roof racks and starts to head towards her. The young man glaring at Deb as if to say “Get out of my way, I’m in a hurry! ”

So as not to inflame the situation Deb reverses back out of the tunnel of cars, back where she started from, letting the impatient individual through without conflict.

What a great example! So what if the surf was up, I’m sure nothing would change in another 30 seconds ! Just another sad indictment of what the world has become! Impatient, self entitlement, pompous arrogance and a total lack of consideration for others.

Or was it?

Deb hadn’t mentioned anything about her little “run in” with the young guy a couple of doors up. So, in ignorant bliss I’m sitting having happy hour after another work day when the door bell rings “ Buzz Buzz, Buzz Buzz”.

Give me strength, who the bloody hell could that be! I say to myself –

Caveat due about now. This is after a day at work being bothered by stakeholders (kind description for want of another) for all sorts of pitiful reasons. I’m not always a cantankerous person – must have been a bad day!

So with a slight level of outrage I make my way to the door – this better be good ! I open the door to greet Jed, six foot four around 100kg’s, late 20’s.

What can I do for you? I ask.

Jed explained to me that he owed Deb an apology as he had felt he had done the wrong thing. I had still had no idea what he was talking about?

I asked Deb to the door, as Jed’s apology unfolded, I was astounded by Jed’s humility and courage in righting his wrong. He said he felt really bad during his surf and wanted to apologise for his behaviour. It just didn’t sit right with him.

I was somewhat taken back, geez fancy that I thought to myself.

It’s one thing to feel like you had wronged someone, but it’s next level to have the fortitude to knock on a virtual stranger’s door and right the wrong. I told Jed that what he had just done was very noble. His integrity was 100% intact. Deb accepted Jed’s apology, we shook hands and Jed went on his way.

Mainly through the media, we are reminded so often about the negatives of the upcoming generations but every so often through whatever means, I’m reminded that there are so many incredible young people from all walks of life, who’s minds and hearts are in tip top condition. I see them in the workplace, on the sports field, in the community. Creating big futures in whatever they want to pursue. And it’s an absolute pleasure to be a part of.

Great stuff Jed – More power to you!

As always, thanks for reading, RD.

  1. That is truly amazing. I was taught as a young manager by RD about humility and truly terrific to see it the next generation down and in such unprompted fashion. Gives us all hope our morales and integrity’s are passed down.

Deb from my small interactions with you blessed to see Jed pass on his humility and truly an outstanding feet in these times and very refreshing.
