Where To From Here

It’s been an interesting couple of months.

Amongst the frustrations of the Covid pandemic, I lost Manstheory somewhere in cyber space. Technology support is a funny thing. The techie people talk to you like you know what’s going on. Just do this, then that, download this, contact them, redirect your server, do three handstands then stand on one leg. OMG if I knew what was required I wouldn’t be talking to you !!! Hopefully they never expect to undergo brain surgery from a bricklayer.

Many thanks to Adam at Web Design Direct on the Gold Coast who gave me his brilliant and tenacious support in getting Manstheory back on deck. Great job Adam and I highly recommend Adam for whatever you require in web design or wordpress technical issues. So onwards and upwards.

Any hoo, my world – it’s been wildly chaotic. Work has been extraordinarily busy and not always in a positive sense. A lot of damage control, dealing with people issues and contract tenders that have been one after the other. I have no doubt a lot of this has been COVID driven and with it, a whole new range of new situations to manage and work through. Since mid July, the demands have meant working most weekends (to some extent) to stay in front of the game. Very challenging but that’s what’s been required. I’m sure it will settle down at some stage so resilience has been key.

Through this I’ve neglected other aspects of my life which have had to be set aside to accomodate the work demand – Manstheory included.

THERE’S GOT TO BE A BETTER WAY !!

Like so many other folks around my age, here we are – we’ve all done the hard yards over many years. Our kids are doing well, we’re fortunate that our finances are under control and we have our health.

I’m shortly going to enter what I believe is potentially the last decade of my life where I’m still able to be physically active at a reasonably high level. Moving past this next decade my body might not be as accomodating.

So my question to myself is “If the pace of my work life continues, am I prepared to continue to forego my other interests outside of my day to day work”?

My life is so full of other creative interests and a weekend just doesn’t cut it. All the fun stuff – my guitars, my swimming, my reading, my golf, my garden, my family, our home, exploring more of the world, my search for the Holy Grail as it were.

There’s a bit to consider!

Though apparently I’m not the only one starting to think about how I would like to see my next years unfold.

It’s been dubbed the Great Resignation: Millions of people around the globe, from frontline workers to senior executives, voluntarily calling time on their jobs. According to recent estimations more than 40 per cent of the global workforce are considering leaving their current jobs in the next year. It seems it is just becoming too complicated and not worth the stress. Seems a large part of the workforce are looking towards a simpler life and have better things to do outside of work.

As the world opens up and learns to live with COVID (if that actually is the case) I think it’s going to be a very interesting couple of years yet before any normality returns – if ever.

There’s already a labour shortage and if the “Great Resignation” comes to fruition, that’s a big hole to fill with the loss of so many experienced people. Take away the people who don’t have any skills and don’t want to do the unskilled work. It leaves a lot of demand being placed on a shrinking workforce.

Albert Einstein said ”Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty, lies opportunity.”

If you have the skills and the mindset, there will be huge opportunity not yet recognised in the next decade. Sadly not so for those who have chosen the option of stagnation over their own development.

While the new trail blazers take up their positions, that cold beer after a game of golf on a Monday sounds very appealing. Dig out the Long Board for a surf on Tuesday, how’s Wednesday looking – pretty damned good! I’d be happy with a week that just keeps being a weekend.

Interesting times indeed.

Great to back and as always – thanks for reading RD.

  1. Hi Reece, it has been a while since we have heard from you.
As you know we have taken the plunge and believe me “there is a better way”. The opportunities that have opened up for us are amazing. Not only “fun stuff” with family and friends, buy job opportunities in areas that I would not have considered in the past.
Talk soon and stay safe. Cheers

    • Hi Dave
