Deb, myself & our dog “Roxy” were out on our Sunday morning walk along the beautiful Burleigh Beach Esplanade. The sun was glistening on the Pacific Ocean; it was already a gorgeous day and about to get even better. We were about to move through the popular Burleigh Sunday markets where they usually have a local guitarist / vocalist knocking out a few numbers like most community markets – I always enjoy listening to live music at this level. Then here was another guy doing his thing. I looked at Deb (and Roxy the human Staffy) “Listen to the voice on that guy, we gotta stop and have a listen!”

Scene set – Matty’s debut album now in my hot little hand. We are heading home, being somewhat excited that I was going to enjoy this through my Zeppelin sound system.

I wasn’t disappointed!

Matt has a deep and powerful voice that can really knock the socks off you. The songs are all original with a great solid soulful beat mixed with the odd banjo, didgeredoo, keyboard/ piano with acoustic and electric guitar all blended into a modern production. Yet Matty’s music still has a rawness that hasn’t been lost through his catchy chord progressions along with some great riffs and that great voice. It’s the debut album and it just has a great feel – if it has a category I’m told it’s Indie Rock. I was sold within the first play of my newly purchased CD from Matt’s side table at the market. Along with a really genuine and warm “Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it” from Matt.

Shortly thereafter, having MD (24 Year old manstheory offsider) in the ute with me, I’ve got Soul Fire playing. Not a word from MD – I thought the cat had his tongue and something was wrong or bugging him. When I asked what’s up ? His reply was “Who is this guy, this is awesome!” Great music crosses generations.

The Album is available on iTunes. I’m not sure if “Soul Fire” is in shops so Matty’s website is www.matty-rogers.com if you wanted to get the actual CD. I’ve inserted one of my favourite songs off “Soul Fire” just to wet your appetite. If your using a mobile device or tablet and not able to get the sound cloud attached visit our site.

I’ll be keeping an eye out for Matty’s next gig. Fantastic talent and I thoroughly enjoy this album. I love those random moments when you walk away going “How good was that! ”

More power to you Matty Rogers.

  1. Nice song from Matty Rogers. Reminds me a bit of Bob Segar – good soulful voice with some rawness. Love the banjo and that Digaroo thingy! Today is Mom’s Day here. Planning our beach walk with Kathy and our faithful Chester then visit my Mom Ing Hornbeak (age 94) for some afternoon pie and greetings!

    • Hey Scott
Yes I thought of Bob Seger also.
I recall it was your mums birthday while we were in China – great innings at 94 not out!
We hope you & Kathy are well and thanks for your comment. Much appreciated.
