Living on the Edge

A couple of weeks ago while riding his pushbike on the Adriatic Coast of Italy, a 35 year old American was hit by a car and suffered severe injuries. Five days later he succumbed to his injuries and passed away. I’d suggest, world wide, he wouldn’t have been the only cyclist hit by a car on that day. But there was something different about this guy.

Let’s jump around a bit here:

I’ve been a great fan of Grand Prix motorcycle racing for many years and I also follow the World Super Bikes championship. These guys are poetry in motion, a beauty to behold. Their skills in living on the edge of the envelope, working so fluently with these bikes that can reach speeds in excess of 350 kilometres per hour, that will spit you off quicker than the blink of an eye if you dare take it past that limit. Yet you have to be as close to the limit to be the best in the game, you need to have an extraordinary focus, extraordinary reactionary speed an amazing sense of balance and a fearless approach in backing your ability. Your professional life is genuinely living on the edge and taking it to that limit.

So let’s go back to the tragic death of the push bike rider – Nicky Hayden.

Nicky Hayden won the World Championship in Grand Prix Motorcycle racing in 2006 beating the Italian Valentino Rossi for the title. He was also the team mate of Casey Stoner in 2009 while riding for Ducati. Up until his recent death, he was riding for Honda in the World Super Bike championship. Nicky Hayden was highly credentialed and had reached the pinnacle of this incredible sport. His name sits along side such greats as Valentino Rossi, Michael Doohan, Giacomo Agostini, Barry Sheene and of course Wayne Gardner and Casey Stoner.

Moving forward.

Today I celebrate another birthday, I guess I’m classified as middle aged and as the years go by I’m increasingly aware that time waits for no man. In reflecting on the life of Nicky Hayden and the irony that he spent his life pushing the limits and living on the edge only to lose that life in a push bike accident, also begs me to ask the question of myself.

Have I pushed the limit or just coasted along living in hope that something would change in reaching what I wanted to achieve? Honestly my answer would be yes and no. Without going into my own ups and downs, if I had my time again would I do any thing different ? Yes – I would have pushed the limits further when I was younger. Looking back I really didn’t have a lot to lose and more to gain. But that’s hindsight and its only worth is the getting of wisdom.

We are in control of our own destiny. Not all of us aim to be a world champion but we all have aspirations. To make a genuine commitment to your aspirations and chase your dreams when you have the drive and energy of youth is so important. Time waits for no man, there is no guarantee what may happen tomorrow.  I think about Nicky Hayden and what he achieved in his 35 years of life and then I think about the people that die at 35 but are buried at 80 – the latter just settled for an existence of mediocrity far from that edge that holds the key to living an exciting, rewarding and meaningful life.
