The Future Today

For as long as I can remember, I’ve followed the World Superbikes.

At the be-moans of my darling wife – she can’t believe how many races I can find on television; it drives her crazy for some strange reason?

It’s an art form the way these guys ride these bikes, a thing of beauty – in my mind anyway.

So by pure chance (I can hear Deb saying it had nothing to do with chance) I sat down to watch a support race to the big guns. To my surprise the supports were electric bikes – unbelievable! They look exactly the same as a normal race bike and they’re quick and really quiet which takes a bit of getting used to.

This got me thinking about how fast things are changing.

It wasn’t long ago when electric cars were not much more than an electric dream. In little time the advancements have been extraordinary.

Elon Musk and his Tesla brand have taken electric cars to a whole new level in luxury and performance. Tesla are now the largest selling performance vehicle in California – electric cars are becoming a genuine alternative.

The Tesla Model “S”

Some of the world’s top car manufacturers BMW, Mercedes Benz, Jaguar and Porsche are venturing into this realm and of course, the Toyota Prius has been chipping away for a few years.

And now I’m watching a full race grid of electric race bikes with some of the world’s best riders aboard!

The future is upon us and as with all concepts that gain traction, further development and advancements will continue to be made at a rapid pace.

Question – Has the electric vehicle the potential to create a major economic shift on a global scale?

Let’s imagine in 20 years the majority of cars are electric.

The downward shift in demand for oil would be huge. If a country’s prosperity relies on oil as its Number 1 revenue generator, then it would be realistic to expect a downward economic shift.

Car and engine manufacturing plants will be turned upside down. Service stations would take on a whole new meaning and mechanics as we know them today would be a dying trade.

So if oil is on the way out what’s on the way in?

It would again be reasonable to think shares in Lithium or Cobalt mining would be a good move. Batteries need these materials.

Hold the Bus ! Don’t jump too soon, now there’s “Hi Capacity Sodium-ion” this also allows charging of a battery in a few minutes and the duration of the battery’s power is much longer. Not to mention they’re lighter and smaller than what today’s batteries are.

It seems just as technology comes up with the next best thing it’s outdated and replaced with the next best thing – tough gig if you’re trying to put together a long term business plan in a technology industry. Nothing is long term !

So with every action there is a reaction.

And my reaction is – I think I’ll just go back to my Superbikes. It’s great to be a spectator in such a fast paced environment, just like the world we live in.
