To clarify the term Ute: Short for Utility.

In car terms, it goes back to the mid-20th century where a farmer’s wife thought it worthwhile approaching a certain manufacturer at the time (I believe it was Ford) to introduce a car that could be used as a workhorse through the working week and be suitable to go to town and attend church on a Sunday. The Utility was born!

I’ve always had a ute, seven in fact – though to be totally honest I did have a couple of station wagons in my earlier days. But that’s a whole different story on application.

One may be forgiven for assuming a ute leans towards the tradesman or operational “hands on” type of employment.  But, for the bloke who isn’t one of the above, yet enjoys getting his hands dirty, gets into property and all that is required with DIY general maintenance or renovation, golf, surfing, camping, landscaping, fishing, kids (dual cab required here), dogs, tip trips, dirt bikes, mountain bikes or similar. Not to mention the joy of the convenience in limiting the passenger numbers, in some cases to the grand total of one, you name it, the list goes on. The ability to “throw it in the back” is a necessity in my world. A Bloke needs a ute !

Now as time has moved on I’m not having to or going as hard in some pursuits as some aforementioned tasks mentioned above  – though I do still dabble and have a play with a bit of property and don’t mind a surf (longboard), game of golf (bloody hopeless) and a trip to the tip etc. So we arrive at my current ute and what a beauty she is.         

Make: Holden  Model: VE SS Ute  Year: 2008

Engine: 6 litre V8 – 270 Kw (384 Horsepower)

Transmission: 6 speed auto with sequential selection

Brakes and Suspension: Four wheel discs on Holden sports suspension

Tyres: Front & Rear 245/40 R19  Bridgestone Potenza’s all round.

Interior: Full leather bucket seats with satellite navigation, 6 stacker CD, MP3 player connectivity, cruise control, climate control, auto sensitive lights and whatever else I haven’t yet figured out.

It is now seven years old and it’s about to become a classic. The current 2015/16 build is the last of the Holden Ute. You want a new ute – try buying a SUV type or dual cab. Yes you can feel like a King in your pseudo “big rig” and honestly they are probably great cars. However, consider this as a comparison;

A strictly two seater V8 powered sports car that also doubles as a Ute. Yes, it’s not for the family or the true tradesman but it’s a special vehicle that’s sadly fading into Australian motoring history. The latest models are powered by a 6.2 litre engine and the top “Malloo” models are developing in excess of 327 Kw which is around 440 horsepower.

I truly enjoy my ute, just as I enjoyed my 1966 HD Holden and 1968 XT Falcon utes all those years ago. Though back then you had limited options. This time it’s a whole new animal – RD
